5 Preventive Maintenance Mistakes That Cost Fleets Thousands

BINTEK Dispatch Team · Sep 18, 2026

Skipping intervals, ignoring minor leaks, and deferring grease work turns a $40 service into a $4,000 roadside repair. Here's what to fix first.

Preventive maintenance is the single highest-ROI line item on a fleet budget — and it's the one most fleets underfund. When a PM gets pushed a week for a load, that $40 oil change quietly becomes a $4,000 turbo or a $9,000 engine. We see the same five mistakes on almost every call BINTEK runs across Metro Atlanta.

1. Stretching the interval past the mileage

The service interval is a ceiling, not a target. Oil doesn't care that you almost made it. Once lubricity drops and soot loading climbs, bearing wear accelerates fast. A 1,000-mile overage in stop-and-go Atlanta traffic does more damage than 5,000 clean highway miles.

2. Skipping the fuel/water separator

Water in the fuel system is the #1 cause of injector failure we see on heavy-duty units. Draining the separator takes two minutes at a PM. Replacing a set of injectors takes two days and a four-figure parts bill.

3. Deferring grease until 'next time'

Unlubricated Zerk fittings don't get better — they seize. A dry fifth wheel, U-joint, or slack adjuster builds heat, then play, then failure. We grease every accessible fitting on every PM. It's the cheapest insurance you can buy.

4. Ignoring the brake visual at PM

A pad that's at 4mm this month will be metal-on-metal next month. The brake visual at PM exists to catch this exact progression. Waiting until the driver hears the squeal means a rotor too — and a truck down during the repair.

5. No record of what was done

If it isn't documented, it didn't happen — at least not for DOT or your warranty. Every BINTEK PM includes a written walkaround: lights, tires, leaks, brakes, suspension, wheel torque. You get the record; we keep the copy.
